Friday Night Wine Tasting: Table One: New Arrivals from Spain
Txakoli Uno 2012 Txakoli (CHOCK-oh-lee), is a white wine from the Basque Country in Northern Spain. This specific Txakoli is from the tiny appellation, Arabako, approximately 25km inland from Bilbao. The grapes are Hondarrabi Zuri & Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratia, both native varietals to the region. This tiny appellation produces a wine that is a bit fuller and rounder than the Txakolinas produced closer to the shoreline but still maintains the tangy, long lasting flavors of citrus and mineral. A wonderful wine to welcome the Spring, great for any seafood dish or an aperitif to start the evening. Sale Price 14.99 Regular Price 16.99
Josep Foraster Cava Brut Rose NV Located in central Catalunya, Conca de Barbera is well known for its production of cava and Josep Foraster makes theirs from 100% Trepat, a native red grape grown on their estate. Trepat thrives in the local alluvial solis of clay and sand. With light tannins, bright red fruit, and searing acidity, this Cava Rose has a deep, rich color but also a bold zestiness on the palate. This combination makes it a terrific sparkilng wine for year round consumption. Sale Price 21.99 Regular Price 24.99
2013 Ponce - Reto 93 Points Robert Parker It's a surprisingly stony, mineral wine that is austere and slowly developing some faint white flower notes. This complex and elegant wine changes with time in the glass and even displays some marine notes (seaweed, low tide). The palate shows both good volume and superb acidity that is sharp with a tasty, mineral and almost salty finish. "Reto" means challenge, as it was a challenge for Ponce to produce a white with this grapes. I think he has succeeded. It's a great, mineral white at a great price. 8,000 bottles were produced. Cesca Vincent Priorat 2011/2012 Cesca Vincent, a fifth generation winemaker, makes terroir driven wines. The Priorat region of Spain is known for its' big, dense red wines. Alluvial soil rich in clay, with gravel and round stones combined with vineyards of high elevation produce juicy, succulent, yet distinctly mineral flavors. This affordable Priorat is a blend of Grenache, Cabernet, Merlot, and Carignan. The nose is plummy and savory, an attractive blend of red fruit and spicy herbs. The palate is a rich blend of jammy fruit, licorice, and earthy mineral. This is a wine that goes perfectly with a big, juicy steak. Sale Price 16.99 Regular Price 19.99
2013 Ponce Buena Pinta 93 Points Robert Parker Very light, translucent ruby-colored, the nose is an explosion of wild strawberries and lilies with some black pepper spicy undertones, more Atlantic than Mediterranean, especially in a cold, long growing season like 2013. The palate is quite light, like a refreshing berry juice with high acidity and low tannin that is supple and refreshing. This is a approachable, but as the initial vintages are evolving well, I think this 2013 could evolve for a few years. Awesome value! 4,200 bottles were produced Sale Price 19.99 Regular Price 23.99
