2005 Vineyard 29 Vineyard 29 Cru
92 Points Robert Parker
The 2005 Cru is a gorgeous wine, a seductive style of Cabernet with outstanding ripeness, purity, soft tannins, and an expansive texture. With loads of black currant and tobacco leaf notes intermixed with a subtle touch of wood, this is a beauty to drink over the next 10-12 years. The impressive talents of viticulturalist David Abreu and winemaker/consultant Philippe Melka have turned Vineyard 29, owned by Chuck and Anne McMinn, into a bright new star of Napa.

D'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2005
95 Points Wine Advocate
D’Arenberg’s most famous wine is its flagship, The Dead Arm Shiraz. The 2005 The Dead Arm Shiraz is sourced from ancient head-pruned vines. It was aged for 22 months in a mix of new and used French and American oak. It is opaque purple/black with an expansive perfume of toast, smoke, spice box, mineral, pencil lead, tar, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry. Full-bodied, opulent, and super-concentrated, this structured, lengthy wine will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring and drink well through 2025.

Torbreck The Factor 2005
97 Points Wine Advocate
The 2005 The Factor is 100% Shiraz sourced from dry grown vines from six sub-regions of Barossa. It spent 24 months in 30% new French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it delivers an expressive bouquet of pepper, smoke, espresso roast, blackberry, blueberry, and licorice. Full-bodied and voluptuous on the palate, nuances of saddle leather and mineral emerge to complement the layers of spicy blue and black fruits. The wine is beautifully integrated with enough well-concealed tannin to keep this wine evolving for a decade. The pure finish lingers for 60+ seconds to complete the experience of a totally hedonistic turn-on.

Dominus 2004
94 Points Wine Advocate
The elegant, dark plum/purple/garnet-colored 2004 Dominus exhibits a big, sweet, cedary, roasted herb, mocha, black cherry liqueur, black currant, and earth-scented perfume. Medium to full-bodied with silky tannin as well as a luscious mouthfeel and finish, it should be more accessible in its youth than many of its predecessors, but easily last for two decades.

Chateau Palmer 2004
94 Points Wine Advocate
This stunning wine is one of the vintage’s great successes. Administrator Thomas Duroux has fashioned a modern day version of Palmer’s brilliant 1966. Displaying a rare combination of power and elegance, this dense purple-colored offering exhibits notes of blackberries, truffles, flowers, incense, and camphor. Long, classic, and medium to full-bodied with stunning texture and richness, this superb effort is a candidate for the finest Margaux of the vintage.

Chateau Cos D’Estournel 2004
94 pts Wine Spectator
A beautiful example of the vintage, proprietor Michel Reybier and his top-notch winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats, have fashioned an exceptional wine displaying a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of boysenberries, black currants, cherries, pain grille, roasted herbs, and licorice. Medium-bodied with impressive density for the vintage, sweet tannin, and outstanding richness and length, it should be at its finest between 2009 and 2020+.

Newton Unfiltered 2005
96 points Robert Parker
One of California’s most glorious Chardonnays, and still somewhat under the radar, is the Newton 2005 Chardonnay Unfiltered. This is another wine that has the capacity in certain vintages to evolve for 8-10 years. A bottle of the 1991 I had recently was stunning (I rated it 92), and of course it was 16 years of age. There are 10,700 cases of this wine, which is put through full malolactic and bottle unfiltered with minimal manipulation. The 2005 is fabulous, and one of the best examples of this cuvee made at Newton. Notes of honeysuckle, poached pear, brioche, and white currants are present in this wine, which also exhibits some citrus oil and a subtle influence of new oak. Full-bodied, fleshy, and rich, with super purity and stature, this is a gorgeous Chardonnay that should drink nicely for 7-10 years.
